speed-up-coomputerDoes it take a long time starting up your computer? Are you anxious of looking ways to speed up your computer when before, it just takes a minute to start up? Purchasing a new computer may not be the best idea.

The performance of the computer will degrade if it is not maintained properly. To counterbalance this slowing down of the computer, you have the responsibility yourself to fix the performance issues.  Follow these steps to enhance the efficiency of your computer.

  1. Remove those harmful viruses and spywares. They are the primary cause of the slowing down of the computer. Update weekly and regularly run the antivirus software.
  2. Defragment your computer in regular basis. This process will place similar files and folders closer together and arrange it to the hard disk to further speed up loading process. If defragmenting for the first time, have it done after disk clean up. After the first disk clean up, defrag, and then perform another disk clean up.
  3. Perform disk clean up. Click run on Start menu. Enter the keyword”cleanmgr.exe” in the text box. Press OK and it will clean up unnecessary files in your computer.
  4. Remove unnecessary and unwanted software. Look for the control panel in the start menu. Single click the menu “add remove programs”. Select the old software and programs that are not needed and click the “remove” option.
  5. Delete not wanted Start-up programs. Run msconfig on start menu. Select the startup tab. Select by unchecking the unnecessary programs that you don’t want to run during start up. Be extra careful in disabling the services that you do not need or use. If you are in doubt of the application, do not disable them. Wrong disabling of services can lead to dangerous effects and unexpected problems that cannot be detected right away. Look for experts in the field to let them do the services for you.
  6. Hasten the processing time by turning off those fancy graphics included in the Windows XP software.
  7. Ensure that a firewall is turned on and in the right location. Most of the viruses and spyware can disable the firewall. Install only one firewall to avoid conflict. If you had found out that the firewall is not active, activate it by going to the Start Menu, click Control Panel and check if the Windows Firewall is green.

win7Almost everyone is waiting to catch the first glimpse of Windows 7, which is expected to release by the end of this year. Although, Microsoft hasn’t specified a release date as yet, it is for sure that 2009 will be the year for release.

Windows 7 is believed to overcome most of the shortcomings our existing operating system has. Windows 7 is said to be more compatible and better than Vista. While you are eagerly awaiting the launch of Windows 7, you might want to make sure that you meet the basic requirements to get started with Windows 7.

I have listed below the basic requirements to get started with Windows 7 once Microsoft decides to launch it.

  • 1GHz processor (32- or 64-bit)
  • 1GB Memory
  • 128MB memory along with DX9 graphics support
  • A DVD-R/W drive
  • 16GB free disk space

The requirements aren’t too demanding, as most computers may already have the right specifications listed above. Windows 7 is available in beta version for testers as of now, and few users claim Windows 7 to be the best operating system already. It is found to be more efficient than even Windows XP in terms of processor and memory usage.

Windows 7 offers a number of unique features and improvement over the earlier versions. Let me share with you the major benefits that Windows 7 will offer its users.

The biggest advantage which Windows 7 scores over other operating system is the touchscreen interface. Apple Mac OS X is the only one that offers touchscreen interface as of now. Windows 7 will now offer you touchscreen facility, along with many other added features.

Windows 7 is said to load faster than any other operating system. Most testers who have tried the beta version of Windows 7 claim that it is at least 20% faster than Windows Vista.

Most applications are given a makeover and the taskbar tool is enhanced as well. Windows 7 is also said to work great on Laptops in terms of battery management and loading time.

Better security system, easy access, better control are amongst the other benefits, Windows 7 will offer.

computer buyingPurchasing a computer in whatever purpose involves costly decisions. Below are the listings of helpful tips of what to look for when buying a computer.

System Tips - Make sure you are getting Windows XP or higher versions. Never settle for an old operating system. XP is a stable version as the Windows 2000 and is user friendly.  If your profession requires intensive quality video editing and graphic design, Windows 2000 must be preferred. The only drawback with Windows 2000 is that there are many compatibility problems with the external hardware and software such as the scanner, optical disk drives and others.  Just make sure that these peripherals works well when purchased.
Hard Drive Tips - It is one of the most important considerations when purchasing a computer because it is eventually the designated place for all of your files and information. Try looking for the maximum size hard drive because the space will run out as fast if it is of minimal size. It will be either replaced or you need to add another drive to your computer. This means another cost then.
Case Tips - Purchase a computer with a large case and minimal features like the sound and video for better upgradeability. A disadvantage of small cases is that it is difficult to add other peripherals such as drives later. Make sure also that the case supports the standard motherboard, if it will fit your desk or table and if the drives will always be accessible I any way you will position it.
Monitor Tips - High quality 19-monitor should be preferred. LCD flat screen is best recommended.
Memory Tips - It should have at least 256MB of RAM because this improves the performance of the computer. For power user, 512 RAM is needed for optimum functionality. The latest DR RAM is faster and a requisite for some Pentium machines. Also, determine if the type of memory can be upgraded in the future. More memory in the computer means more efficiency.
Modem Tips -With the widespread of broadband, modem has becoming important. Computer must be equipped of at least 56K modem, the greater the speed, the faster will the Internet demand for bandwidth.
Printer Tips - Low cost (below$70) and low end printers are not recommended because they are more prone to paper jamming problems. Unless you have a quality photo printing needs, inkjet printer is not recommended because it is very expensive. HP printers are then preferred because of the durability and wide availability of cartridges. Avoid purchasing “All in one” system just like the fax, copier, scanner because these types have many connectivity and other problems encountered
Sound Tips - Never settle with the free speakers provided with the most of the new PCs. Purchase a separate better speaker from around $29 to $49 for better sound quality. Most of the new computers have built in standard sound card. However, if you wanted to hear music of stereo quality, a separate more advanced sound card needs to be purchased to enjoy sound of high quality during games and other programs.
